EP.23 -  8-10-18 From Crypto the WonderDog This is Dean Kirkland with BlockBytes!  The Top Headlines in Crypto and Blockchain News! Presented by DASH. Made for payments, DASH is the ultimate digital currency for both brick-and-mortar and online merchants.

Here are the TOP Headlines in Crypto and Blockchain News on Friday the 10th of August 2018

-Peter Van Valkenburgh, the director of research at the blockchain advocacy group Coin Center, published a report today arguing that certain cryptocurrencies should be treated as securities. The report, which updates an earlier version from 2016, examines three variables that Valkenburgh believes are salient for determining whether a cryptocurrency is a security: "distribution, decentralization, and functionality." In particular, Valkenburgh argues what is most important to consider is: how a token is initially distributed, how decentralized its underlying network is and what powers or rights token holders have should determine whether it is a security.

Facebook is up to something in their new cryptocurrency division and reports of behind the scenes moves are beginning to emerge. Business Insider recently reported that Facebook’s blockchain research division recently had a meeting with Stellar Lumens to brainstorm ways the company could use blockchain technology to bolster their payments network. Rumor has it that Facebook even discussed ways to fork the Stellar public blockchain as a way to build out their payments network. To date, Facebook remains very interested in creating it’s own digital token and Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has said he is challenging himself by attempting to learn more about “encryption and cryptocurrency.”

The Tezos Foundation announced today that it plans to sponsor and issue research grants for blockchain technology and smart contracts development projects. According to the press release, the foundation has already chosen 4 research institutions to give grants: Cornell University, the University of Beira Interior, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and France-IOI.

2 days ago the IOTA Foundation released a statement as an attempt to cool down apprehensive investors and supporters after a detailed transcript highlighting a major row between senior management and IOTA founders surfaced on the internet. According to a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), IOTA founders Serguei Popov and Sergey Ivancheglo were restricted from access to the Foundation’s Board of Directors. According to the released statement, IOTA acknowledged that “circumstances lead to a situation, where two of the IOTA founders have been waiting for board seats for more than four months.” This led to frustrations between the founders and the IOTA Foundation as they felt they were slowly being cut out of the picture.

China’s southeastern city of Shenzhen has issued the first digital tax invoice known as a “fapiao” on blockchain according to reports from local news outlet EEO. WeChat developer, Tencent, worked in partnership with the Shenzhen Municipal Taxation Bureau to develop the platform and so far it is the only government backed platform to gain the approval of the State Administration of Taxation. Consumers, merchants and tax authorities are now able to receive “fapiao” for all goods and services purchased in the country. Consumers can also make their fapiao payments via WeChat and a digital invoice is created that can later be shown to tax inspectors.

Here are the TOP Headlines in Crypto and Blockchain News on Thursday the 9th of August 2018

-Bitcoin (BTC) bulls appear to be defending the $6,000 support as the current sell-off is beginning to show signs of exhaustion. BTC has now dropped to a three-week low of $6,121 and is down 26 from the July 24th high at $8,507. BTC closed below the ascending trendline but found support at $6,344. A drop below $6,000 is still on the cards but the RSI is now in oversold territory which suggest a small relief rally is on the way..

A little known Hardware wallet called BitFi received a lot of attention, ever since John McAfee claimed it is unhackable. To back his claim, he announced a $250K bounty to anyone who manages to hack it. Though hackers have managed to demonstrate multiple exploits, both McAfee and the company has refused to accept them. To make things worse, a 15-year old hacker has now taken control over the hardware to run retro game DooM on it. Once again, McAfee has refused to admit the hack..

Thailand recently announced favourable regulations for Cryptocurrencies and ICOs in the country. The regulatory body announced that for a company to conduct an ICO, they'd have to apply with the SEC and get an approval. The Thai SEC has also created an ICO portal for this purpose. According to a new report, nearly 50 companies have applied for an ICO licence in the country. The SEC has now selected 5 projects to run them as pilots before approving the remaining applications..

Early this year, IBM and Maersk announced a partnership to create TradeLens, a blockchain solution for the shipping industry. TradeLens is looking to integrate global supply chain in partnership with 94 different organisations who have agreed to try out the new system. The partnership includes more than 20 port and terminal operators in countries like Singapore and Hong Kong.

It is no secret that Bitcoin Mining uses a considerable amount of electricity. Though the exact impact is not clear, Dr Jon Truby, the director of the Centre for Law and Development at Qatar University has asked for a ban on mining because it threatens our existence. He believes as Bitcoin's value increases and greater the incentive it is to mine, it's going to have a bigger impact on the environment. At the same time, he believes governments will not be able to regulate it. So the crypto community will have to develop alternative solutions which do not have an impact on the environment.

Here are the TOP Headlines in Crypto and Blockchain News on Wednesday the 8th of August 2018

-Police in South Korea raided the office of an organization who promised investors a stake in valuables supposedly stored on a sunken Russian warship. 27 investigators from the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency made a surprise visit to the Shinil Group in Yeouido and seven related locations this Tuesday. The firm had showed investors footage of what was marketed as wreckage of the Dmitrii Donskoi and a business partner of Shinil convinced investors to buy into the firms native coin called Shinil Gold Coin. Investors were told that the ship sank with 200 tons of gold worth roughly $134 billion and the value of Shinil Gold Coin was hinged to this value. Investors had been promised that the value of Shinil Gold Coin would go from $0.18 to $9 once the wreck and it’s treasure were reclaimed.

Hong Kong-based OKEx, the No. 2 cryptocurrency exchange based on trading volume, has announced a partner blockchain-fueled gaming exchange is now live. OKGaEx.com went live today. According to a statement: “OKGaEx provides gaming digital asset and derivatives trading services to over 220 million gamers around the world, building an eco-system for all blockchain gaming projects.” Bit.Game Co-Founder He Wei Feng was named as the chief executive officer of the new gaming platform. OKGaEx is currently running a fee rebate special.

According to a recent blog post, tech giant Microsoft recently integrated a proof-of-authority (PoA) algorithm on its Ethereum (ETH) blockchain product on its cloud platform Azure. The new algorithm will supposedly facilitate “more efficient” decentralized application (dApp) development where “all consensus participants are known and reputable.” The new PoA algorithm, which will supplant the current proof-of-work (PoW) consensus mechanism, does not require competition in completing the transactions, and - unlike its predecessor - is based on the principle of approved identities or validators on a blockchain. The new product on Azure features a number of security-focused development tools like an identity leasing system, Parity’s web-assembly support, Azure Monitor, and a Governance dApp.

Yesterday's unexpected correction has brought the cryptocurrency market capitalization to its lowest valuation for 2018. The US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) decision to postpone their decision on bitcoin ETF applications could have possibly been the catalyst that set off the most recent pullback. Currently, the total market capitalization of the cryptocurrency market is at $228.6 billion which is the lowest level seen since November 2017. Postponement of the BTC-ETF decision is thought to be the main catalyst behind the bitcoin correction, but the majority of altcoins are also touching new yearly lows and the increase in the bitcoin dominance rate it interpreted as being indicative of investors transition into bitcoin and possibly fiat currencies.

Lightning network, which started out small this year has picked up steam over the last couple of months. The total number of nodes has gone above 3,000, and along with it, the capacity has now reached 97 BTC (approx. $600,000). The total capacity shot up by 400% in July from 24 BTC to 97 BTC. However, the lightning network is still a long way away from mainstream adoption.

It is built on ZhongAn's custom blockchain network and hosted on its Anlink cloud platform. Yang Chin-long, the governor of Taiwan's central bank at a recent event criticized cryptocurrencies. He said they cannot hold any value because they lack the trust element held by traditional fiat currencies. He went on to say that it is not ideal for day-to-day transactions because they are volatile and can only be used for illicit transactions due to the lack of proper regulation. Taiwan's stance on Cryptocurrency is not yet clear. Back in 2013, the central bank had stated Cryptocurrencies cannot be considered as legal tender.

Kin-Wai Lau, the CEO of Internet group Fatfist in a recent interview with CNBC said he is confident that the SEC would eventually approve Bitcoin ETFs. He said Bitcoin's core is its functionality which would not affect its price. ETFs would just help meet the organic demand for this new asset class. As countries around the world regulate cryptocurrencies, the demand for Bitcoin is bound to go up

Bitmain is set to increase its foothold on the American cryptocurrency scene by opening a new mining and data processing centre in a small Texas town called Rockdale. The mining center will be built in a recently closed coal fire power plant and aluminium smelter and the multimillion dollar investment is set to create 300 to 500 new jobs which is significant for a town with a population of 5,861. Construction has already begun and the site is set to open in autumn of 2019. To date, Bitmain has already hired staff in Arizona and Washington and last year they opened a 20,000 sq. foot facility in Silicon Valley.

We have the ability to freeze trading on behalf of the issuers. Let’s say you want to move back to paper — we’d freeze trading and re-issue paper. http://fortune.com/2018/05/18/security-token-harbor-ceo/

E 81 - Kowala - world’s first autonomously stabilizing cryptocurrency - Eiland Glover - CEO and Cofounder of Kowala

August 5, 2018

E 81 - Eiland Glover - CEO and Cofounder of Kowala

A Family of Distributed, Self-Regulating, Asset-Tracking Cryptocurrencies

kUSD is the stable-value payment token for Kowala's kUSD blockchain. The total number of kUSD expands and contracts depending on real-time market conditions.

The Kowala Protocol is our proposed method for creating a new family of cryptocurrencies which maintain stable values while retaining other benefits of cryptocurrencies, such as decentralization, security, privacy, speed of transfer, and low transaction costs.

The Kowala Protocol defines a method for constructing a family of distributed, self-regulating, asset-tracking cryptocurrencies called k Coins .

Each kCoin is designed to be traded on open exchanges and to maintain a close to one-to-one value relative to any widely traded asset such as a currency (USD, EUR, JPY, etc.) or other asset. Each kCoin is identified by a symbol consisting of the letter k followed by the symbol of the underlying asset. For example, the kCoin of USD is kUSD, that of EUR is kEUR, and so forth.

kCoins constantly gather market information from publicly available sources and regulate their value through three core mechanisms: minting variable amounts of coins, applying variable fees, and obtaining feedback from an active and well-informed trading market. In time, these mechanisms always return each kCoin to parity with its underlying, tracked asset. Anticipation of a kCoin’s eventual return to parity, in turn, has the potential to create pure arbitrage opportunities for traders seeking to profit from slight fluctuations in kCoin market prices.

We chose the codebase of the Go Ethereum client3 as the starting point for the development of kCoins in order to access both Ethereum’s strong feature set (especially its sophisticated smart contract facilities) and the collective abilities and ongoing efforts of its development team. On top of this foundation, each kCoin would add the value stabilization and market observation features described above. Finally, to achieve ultra-fast transaction processing performance, we have replaced the Ethereum consensus protocol with Konsensus, an implementation of PBFT derived from Tendermint. Because every kCoin will need a robust exchange market to function properly, each kCoin is implemented as a distinct, independent blockchain with its own tokens, smart contracts, mining community, etc.

    • Eiland Glover is the CEO and Cofounder of Kowala, creator of the world’s first autonomously stabilizing cryptocurrency: kUSD. Eiland has spent his career creating systems and companies at the intersection of finance, technology, education, game theory, and human psychology. He is a firm believer that new technologies must be consciously designed and utilized to empower humans. In 2012, Eiland learned about bitcoin and wondered why this amazing technology had not become ubiquitous. He co-created Kowala based on his belief that a decentralized stable coin is necessary for the mainstream adoption of cryptocurrencies.
  • Kowala:
    • Kowala has created kUSD, the world's first autonomously stabilized cryptocurrency with the fastest, most efficient blockchain ever. This next-generation cryptocurrency has the ability to change the way we exchange as a reliable one-to-one alternative for fiat money. Using the Kowala protocol, kUSD uses advanced stability algorithms to ensure that it remains pegged to the value of the U.S. dollar. Learn more at kowala.tech.

Here are the TOP Headlines in Crypto and Blockchain News on Friday the 3rd of August 2018

-CoinMarketCap took to Twitter to apologize to users for today’s data glitch, saying the reason for the issue surrounded Tether (USDT), the No. 10 cryptocurrency by market cap. The company tweeted: “There was a price calculation error on Tether which caused any listing with a Tether market to become artificially inflated.” Meanwhile, they promised to provide what they described as a “post-mortem” of the situation shortly. Tether is backed by the USD and was recently the target of scrutiny surrounding alleged price manipulation.

-On August 1st, Coinbase announced the hiring of its first Chief Compliance officer, Jeff Horowitz. Jeff is reported to have worked with big companies in the state in the regulatory and compliance department. Previously, he worked with Pershing LLC, BNY Mellon's daughter company, Goldman Sachs, Citigroup and  Federal Deposit Insurance Company (FDIC). Jeff, reportedly, has worked in the compliance and anti-laundering department all his life.

-The Dutch Central Bank has stated that cryptocurrencies are not “real money” and cannot be used for everyday purpose as they are too volatile. The bank has decided not to institute a ban on cryptocurrencies but remains firm in it’s view that they are not real money. Divisional director Petra Hielkema recently stated that, “If something wants to be treated as money, you have to be able to spend, save and calculate with it...So we do not consider it to be money as such.” The Dutch central bank does support the blockchain technology underlying cryptocurrencies and has conducted various experiments with it over the past three years according to Hielkema.

-Tron is gaining mass adoption, and this has seen 20,000 stores in Spain and Italy directly selling Tron to customers. The purchase is enabled by the use of a crypto card, Bitnovo. The company offers the same service for BCH, BTC, Dash, Cardano, Ethereum Classic, and ETH. With the crypto card, users can redeem their cryptos online.
